Chapter Nine

Raleigh sunk lower into the very warm bath that was soothing her aching muscles and cleaned her wounds. She dropped her head back against the tub and let out a low moan of enjoyment. Only an hour ago, she had returned to Mesquite after being freed from the Bass Gang. Once in Mesquite, she learned that the other rangers, including the captain, had been licking their wounds after the train robbery. Her comrades had numerous questions about her brief capture with the gang, but Raleigh could only answer a few.

Since the release, Raleigh had been racking her brain to figure out how far they'd taken her and from where, but it was hopeless. If their hideout was meant to be found, the officers and the bounty hunters out for Sam Bass's gang would have discovered it months ago. For right now, she was content to forget all the drama and wash away all the grime. She was truly thankful for the Lawson Inn that took in the Texas Rangers during their manhunt for Sam Bass and his gang.

Gradually, memories from Raleigh's time with the gang came back. Her eyebrows pushed together when she considered Landen's conversation with Arkansas just outside the cave's mouth. Arkansas had found Raleigh's Authority paper and asked Landen to read it but refused because she was illiterate.

"She told me she could read and write," Raleigh muttered. She suddenly pushed up from the water, hung over the tub, and sought out the canvas pants on the floor. In the back pocket, she pulled out the Authority paper, unfolded it, and was dumbfounded when a smaller piece of paper fell out of the creases. With shaky hands, she opened the worn piece of paper to find a very precise handwriting style. The small note read: You'll find Jim Murphy's father hiding out on West Davis Street in a small, yellow inn. He's wanted for robbing the U.S. Mail.

Raleigh sunk back in the tub holding the note in her left hand above the water. There was no signature, and Raleigh was clueless as to what Landen's handwriting looked like, but it had to be from Landen. However, there was no proof that the lying outlaw could write, so she didn't know whether to trust it, wondering if it was a setup.

With a groan, Raleigh hung her arm over the side of the tub with the folded-up note between her fingers. She rested her head against the cast iron, debating what to do. She didn't like this at all, but her squad of rangers had few choices, considering every time they tried to hunt down the gang, they lost track of them.

Sam Bass had been a teamster in his younger days. He knew the local terrain better than anybody else, and it happened to pay off for him now. The rangers couldn't track the gang very far, as they were less apt to the local lands. The gang not only had Sam Bass's quick intelligence but the Triple L's sharp shooting to protect their backside.
